In search of a little adventure, after deceleration and enjoyment of nature, travelers will definitely discover cycling and hiking. Enjoy the wind and weather, nature and sights up close with your own strength, at an appropriate pace and on individually compiled routes - nothing is better suited for this than these two means of transport. On the Romantic Road, Germany's most popular quality holiday road between the Main and the Alps, you can embark on varied discovery tours, sharpen your senses for the essentials and find new ways.
The long-distance cycle path "Romantic Road" lives up to its name. The river valleys of the Main, Tauber, Wörnitz and Lech, along whose banks it runs, stand for romantic landscapes. Mainly on Bavarian territory, it goes from the residential city of Würzburg in the direction of the Alps. In the northern area, the route also runs through Baden-Württemberg. The "Romantic Road" cycle path is signposted throughout. Between Donauwörth and Füssen it runs parallel to the Via Claudia Augusta cycle route. Most of the route is flat, only in the Pfaffenwinkel there are longer and steeper climbs, which can also be mastered by the inexperienced. If you drive from north to south, you can often benefit from a tailwind. Cyclists traveling by e-bike will find charging stations in almost every town.
Whether it's a long tour or a shorter excursion, between Würzburg and Füssen there are idyllic places, fascinating landscapes and historic cities just waiting to be explored on foot. In addition to shorter stages and circular hikes, there has been a 506-kilometer long-distance hiking trail, the Romantic Road, since 2006, which is one of the most beautiful routes of its kind in all of Germany. Hikers move mainly on leisurely forest and field paths. In the cities, the route always leads right through the center past all the important sights.
The route profile measures 2028 meters of ascent and 1632 meters of descent, the level of difficulty is classified as "easy". In addition, the title "Genießerweg" is ascribed to it, because in addition to the ubiquitous break places in nature, it is never very far to the next historic market place with romantic stops and overnight accommodation suitable for hikers.
